Here’s a mix CD of covers from Waco Skyline Records. It was released today on the label’s blog. Here’s what they had to say about it:
“For the first volume of songs from Waco Skyline we decided to call the sampler Headphones. It is not only only a funny word, but it is a word that also reveals that our producer–the infallible Pope himself–recorded and produced these songs with headphones on the entire time. He mixed them with headphones on while Luis watched episodes of Hannah Montana and his wife developed lesson plans for 3rd graders. He listened (and listens) to the completed songs with headphones.
Stereo is best understood by our immaculate producer while wearing headphones–whether it’s The Zombies’ Odessey and Oracle, Mercury’s “Real Presence” recording of Byron Janis’ performance of Pictures at an Exhibition, or M. Ward’s Post War. So it seems natural that these songs are best experienced with a good pair of headphones–be they hi-fi DJ ‘phones, noise-canceling Bose, or Apple’s earbuds.

This performance is fantastic!
Robyn performed “Be Mine!” off of her self-titled comeback album at the Nobel Peace Prize Awards Ceremony in Norway on December 10th. She performed a stripped-down/acoustic version of the song only found on her EP, The Rakomonie. It is funny what a backing track can do to a song. The song is a beautiful and heartbreaking ballad, but the pop version on the album – though incredibly intruiguing and kick ass – doesn’t hold a great amount of the sorrow behind the track. A great song all around. I especially love the spoken portion in this performance. I always found it a bit cheesy, but her delivery - which reminds me of an Old Hollywood picture star- is phenomenal. Enjoy the tracks.

Womanizer – All-American Rejects
The All-American Rejects have covered Britney Spears’ number 1 hit, “Womanizer“. The band has a lot of fun with it; I especially love the ‘woo!’ from the band and the yelling of ‘womanizer’. It’s an enjoyable cover with a sense of humor. I also liked that they added the chorus of “Happy Together”. Also, the guy with the beer bottles and the bowler is hysterical. Enjoy!

Has anyone else noticed that Beyonce’s new single, “Diva” is eerily similar in build to Lil Wayne’s hit, “A Milli“?

Beyonce vs. Lil Wayne
Both songs start out with a group of words that are then continuously looped throughout the song. Each song also features a heavy boom/rumble sound that accompanies the beat after the chorus has begun to settle. They’re generally amorphous songs. Beyonce’s is more melodic only because she’s a singer, but if she were a rapper the similarities could have been a problem. The songs are definitely enjoyable and their similarities don’t bother me so much as amuse me.

Everyone loves Christmas music; it’s jolly, peppy, and nice. However, a month of hearing “It’s Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas” and “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” on endless repeat does get tiresome. Especially if you work in retail. (Believe me, it’s like “holiday cheer™” is inflicted on employees.)
In retail, Christmas isn’t about Jesus - it’s about gifts, sales, and decorations. So, in that frame of mind, let’s have ourselves a raunchy Christmas tune:
“Christmas Tree” by Lady GaGa.

Keeping in the tradition with the skanky Christmas pop song, (You really thought ”Santa Baby” was clean? I mean, it’s about some “Santa” coming down a girl’s chimney. Tonight.) Gaga has given “Deck the Halls” a hilarious spin. Talking about all the “ho ho ho’s” under the mistletoe, how she wants to “fa la la la la la la la la,” and the fact that her “Christmas Tree” is delicious. It’s a great parody song, but not really a great piece of music. The production by Space Cowboy is fun, but I don’t think that it’ll be a classic. Really don’t. Though I wouldn’t mind hearing ”Christmas Tree” played in a department store…
