Though the buzz around this track is massive, I’m going to give it my own twist:
No, not really. I’m with the consensus. “Love Lockdown” is amazing. Kanye West is a genius for not rapping and using vast amounts of auto tune in a track that, although it has buckets of delicious West production, seems really stripped down. It is also currently number 1 on iTunes after only a day of release.
Driven by a haunting – and damned catchy!- melody, “Lockdown” is gold. It’s a song about failed love that doesn’t fit in any genre. I mean, you could call it an electro-ballad, or Kanye West turned R&B (which is a stretch), or maybe a pop song; but that would never do the song justice. It’s just outside the norm – of everything. I love it when artists take chances and do it exceptionally well. Kanye’s new album is set for a December 2008 release and it’s called 808’s and Heartbreak.

(This is the second studio version with the sleeker production and re-recorded vocal track. Enjoy.)
And in a funny side note, Kanye wrote this about the album on his blog:
“I’m very excited about everything… I guarantee this will be 50’s favorite album of mine. This will be gangster’s album of the year.”
Ah, brings back memories.
Digging Kanye’s new sound? Please leave me a comment about it.
