My boy, Ill Papa has graced us with another hip-hop cover – “Whatever You Like.” And since today is T.I.’s album release day I figured it is the perfect time to get this one out there.

The shift in sound for Ben Folds in his new album, Way to Normal, can’t really be sampled in its lead single, but it’s a good way to start.
The first single “You Don’t Know Me” represents a musical departure for two reasons: 1) it’s a collaboration; something for which he’s not typically known. (Though, who would pass up a collaboration with Regina Spektor?) 2) It uses a great amount of synth keyboard. This shouldn’t be a surprise to fans who have been to his recent concerts, though. Folds has been performing with his new keyboard for a good year or so. It’s good to hear him use it on his record, it makes his sound even more fresh and fun than before, if that was possible. (It was. I know, I’m in shock too.) The song is about a failed relationship that continues because of lack of communication

The rest of the album follows with Folds’ genre-blending/hysterical fashion. It opens with a tribute to Elton John’s “live-but-actually-studio” track, “Benny and the Jets.”

Another highlight of the album is “Cologne,” a ballad that’s really cinematic but given the Folds twist of quirky lyrics.

And of course the title track (that does not share the album title) “Effington” is an eff-you to suburbia and normalcy. The song starts with a choir sining “If there is a god, he is laughing at us and our football team.” Oh, Ben Folds

Remember to pick up the album when it is released this Tuesday (September 30th).

It’s here. Britney Spears’ new single from her December 2008 album, Circus. Since Ms. Spears has been doing so well, her new album is being rushed to stores. Now this song is Pop Heaven. I’m glad that she’s kept the urban, dance-pop beats up. It follows what Blackout had done for Spears. I feel a giant hit in this song. The new group of producers, The Outsyders have put together a song that is going to catapult them to super stardom. It’s good, but not the best, quality (128 kbps). It is, however, infinitely better than the 30 second clips that have been circling the net. UPDATE: The single has just leaked in 320 kbps! “Don’t try to front, uh uh.” Enjoy the track. I am!

The woman who managed to give attention-starved, bi-curious, and inept sorority girls an anthem (and make it a number one single for god-knows-how-many weeks straight [or not straight, tee hee!]) has covered one of my most beloved indie-dance anthems and… it’s actually pretty damned cool.

Speaking of “Electric Feel,” here’s a remix by the electric wonder boys, Justice:

Vampire Weekend seems to be the mainstream indie-pop band of the year. Their self-titled debut was hailed by critics and indie fans alike (in one of the only times they have really agreed). Why the love surrounding this band? Because their mix of baroque, indie-pop, rock, and African beats is delectable. Not to mention their hilarious assertions about English grammar.
Here’s their track from the upcoming flick, Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist. The song is called “Ottoman.” It makes a short lyric from one of their previous songs, “Cape Cod Wassa Wassa”, a part of “Ottoman’s” chorus (see post title).
